Benedict Cumberbatch returns to chat Hamlet with KAS students

Benedict Cumberbatch returned to KAS last term for a Q&A on Hamlet with our A Level English Literature students.

The Emmy Award‑winning actor, who played the titular role during a sell‑out run at London’s Barbican in 2015, joined students in the Upper School Library for a wide‑ranging and insightful discussion on the Shakespearean tragedy – a core A Level text.

The session offered students the rare opportunity to explore the play through the lens of an actor who has lived the role.

Students Isis P and Lily R led the discussion, posing questions devised by their classmates. Benedict responded thoughtfully, sharing perspectives on character, interpretation and performance that will help shape the students’ ongoing study of the play.

This latest visit marks the second time Benedict has taken part in a Q&A at KAS, having also spoken with Sixth Form students last year.

After this year’s discussion, Isis shared the following report: “My fellow A level English Literature students and I recently had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Q&A with Benedict Cumberbatch, concerning his role as Hamlet in Lyndsey Turner’s acclaimed 2015 production of the play.

“It was a hugely impactful and thought-provoking experience. We gained valuable insights into the play, looking at it from different perspectives – particularly from an actor’s viewpoint.

“The Q&A also raised some resonant ideas that will stick with us, presenting much to consider and discuss over the coming weeks.”

Earlier in the term, students also attended a lecture by English Literature scholar Dr Diana Hallam on the presentation of religion in Hamlet, further deepening their understanding of one of the play’s key themes.

We are extremely grateful to both guests for sharing their time and expertise, which will prove invaluable as students prepare for their end‑of‑course examinations this summer.

Our vibrant Sixth Form offers a range of exciting subject trips and talks, alongside a wealth of co-curricular opportunities. Take a look at the A Level courses (and equivalent) we offer, or visit our Admissions page to find out how to apply for a place.
