Entry at 16+

Each year we take up to 30 new external students into our Sixth Form (Year 12) from a range of other schools. Students are encouraged to attend one of two Sixth Form Open Events in the Autumn Term prior to entry. Tours of the school can also be arranged for those unable to join us at an Open Event.

In general, external applicants are required to achieve at least five GCSE passes at Grade 6 or above (as required by individual subjects) for entry into our A level courses.  The specific GCSE requirements for entry are listed for each subject on the A level courses page.

What is the application process for Sixth Form?

  1. Applicants are asked to complete our Sixth Form application form. Whilst completing the form you will be asked to upload the last full school report, predicted GCSE results, GCSE mock results and any other relevant reports.
  2. Students are invited to complete the section on the form or submit a letter outlining their reason for applying to The King Alfred School. As part of the admissions process we will contact the current school for a reference.
  3. Applicants will be invited in to the school for academic, pastoral and subject specific interviews.
  4. Conditional place offers will be made based on these interviews.
  5. Final place confirmations take place on, or after, GCSE results day ahead of the start of the Autumn Term.

Does the school offer Bursaries in Sixth Form?

Financial support is available for students entering the Sixth Form, from both within and outside the school:

  • External candidates must register interest in a bursary by ticking the relevant box on the school application form. Interest in a bursary will not be accepted unless made via this method.
  • Once your interest in a bursary has been received and the registration fee has been paid, you will be sent a Bursary Application Form to complete.
  • The deadline to complete the place application form, pay the registration fee and register your interest in a bursary is Tuesday 27 October, 2026.
  • The Bursary Application Form must be returned by Monday 9 November, 2026.
  • You are advised to apply for a place as early as possible.
  • The process also involves an interview with an external bursary assessment company, which will check into your financial declarations on the completed form.

If you require further information please contact the Director of Finance & Operations on: financialassistance@kingalfred.org.uk.
