The KAS community was blown away by this term’s Middle School show, which was hailed as “sensational”, “sheer joy” and “magical from start to finish”.
Over 60 students from Years 7 to 9 participated in a two-night run of Sister Act Jr. at the Arts Depot. It was staged with the help of our UAL Performance and Production Arts students in Year 12, who took on duties from costumes and choreography to backstage crew.
Eila Z-J (Year 9) played the role of Dolores, a nightclub singer hiding out in a convent from her murderous mobster ex. She excitedly said: “I’ve waited since Year 7 to do this, and I’ve loved it. Everyone’s worked so hard, and seeing it all come together is amazing.
“I think the thing I’m taking away from this is just a lot of joy and happiness.”
Reviews from the audience, comprising family members, staff, and Old Alfredians, were just as positive.
One audience member declared: “If I’d paid £80 to see that in the theatre, I wouldn’t have felt disappointed in the slightest. The performances were West End worthy!”
Another said: “Mindblowing. Every single person who took part was a star. Well done, everyone! And to think students staged it too – truly extraordinary. The staging was so on point. Bravo.”
A third added: “It was wonderful. Sheer joy.”
KAS Head, Robert Lobatto, said: “Funny and moving, joyful and brilliantly performed; it is no exaggeration to say that the entire audience was swept away. One of the great features was the role Sixth Form students played in directing and producing the show, making it a true community event.
The Middle School show is a yearly event, coordinated by our respected Drama department. Previous productions have included The Greatest Showman and High School Musical. It follows this year’s Upper School Show, The Ballad of Raggedy Alice.
This year’s show was staged at the Arts Depot in Finchley, whilst the school’s Phoenix Theatre is temporarily closed for refurbishment.
