Student volunteers develop sports leadership skills

16th January 26

A group of students pose together in a sports hall, arranged in two rows. The back row wears green sports tops, and the front row wears white tops, both bearing The King Alfred School's logo. They are standing and kneeling on a wooden sports floor with a blue wall behind them.

Please join us in congratulating our Year 9 students who represented the school so wonderfully as volunteers at the Barnet Bar No One (BBN1) event last term.

Held at Hendon Leisure Centre, BBN1 gives primary school children with a range of special educational needs (SEN) the opportunity to participate in different sports.

Students take part in a ball‑skills activity inside a sports hall. One adult holds a rugby ball while two students in green sports tops stand ready to catch or pass. A large climbing wall is visible in the background.

Eleven Upper School students helped to run the event, including several who are following our Sports Leaders programme. They assisted in the delivery of activities including Boccia (a seated bowls game), NFL skills, and rugby with Saracens pros.

The mini-lessons were delivered in fast-paced eight-minute sessions. It was a demanding task, but our students rose to the challenge beautifully.

In the process, they developed what the organisers called “key employability skills”. These include communication, teamwork, resilience, problem-solving and adaptability – all core to the school’s ethos.

Students lead a sports activity in a sports hall, guiding younger pupils seated in chairs. Equipment such as cones, hoops and skittles is arranged on the floor, with a small football goal and benches in the background.

The students who took part were: Harry M, Harry F, Elijah B, Panos C, Summer P, Iris C, Luke N, Vivian S, Odin M, Poppy S and Penny F.

West Barnet coordinator, Caroline Connell, said of KAS’s volunteers: “For their first experience at a BBN1, they did a fantastic job. They listened brilliantly and got stuck in with the stations.

“The schools that attended were very impressed with how involved they were, and the coaches relished their support.

Two students kneel on a sports hall floor sorting through a stack of colourful certificates. A cardboard box filled with more certificates sits beside them, and folded chairs are arranged nearby.

“Please pass on our thanks – without their extra help, we can not offer these opportunities to the pupils of Barnet.”

PE teacher Victoria Stewart added: “It was wonderful to see our students thrive in a challenging situation and give back to the Barnet community.”

The Sports Leaders qualifications are part of a national programme that empowers young people to build confidence, resilience and leadership skills by training them to plan and deliver sports activities that support and inspire others in their community.

At KAS, the Sports Leadership qualifications primarily run during Choice, our weekly Friday afternoon activity that forms part of our Upper School co-curricular programme. In addition to external events like BBN1, KAS Sports Leaders also help out with school events such as our annual Sports Day.
