Once again it’s been a flurry of sport on and off site for students from Year 2 upwards. It’s great to see so many students finding the joy of team sports and enjoying practicing and playing with their peers. Head of Sport Tom Franklin rounded up some of the goings on.
Aarun had the pleasure of coaching a keen group of Year 2’s for their first friendly of the year vs local rivals, Heathside. Tom said; “I happened to stroll past and see so many smiley faces jumping for joy when those goals came flooding in!” Both his sides won 2-1 and 4-0.
Year 6 girls played two games losing one 0-3 to Henrietta Barnet’s Year 7 team and winning 2-1 win against Northbridge House’s Year 7s. Alex has been developing a core group of Year 6 girls who are regularly attending the after school club and are keen to play whenever possible. We are hoping that playing against students in the year above them will improve their play. Particular mention to Marnie who stole Girl of the Match!
Our Year 7 boys lost their recent basketball match 29-13 to Northbridge House. It was pleasing to see 14 boys playing in this fixture! Basketball numbers have been increasing at club and we now have a dedicated group of Year 9 students who come at 8am to practice.
There has been a lot of netball action over the last few weeks. In a match against Hendon our Year 10 team showed their strength with a 9-4 win. The very next day the Year 7 team headed to Sherrardswood and St Margaret’s. Despite losing both games they showed great determination and took on board all coaching points which led to significant improvement by the end of their games.
The Year 6 also played St Margaret’s and are showing great potential in their netball. They played against the Year 7 B team and only lost narrowly. They work extremely well as a team and work the ball down the court with real flow and power.
Finally the Year 9 girls piled into the minibus on a snowy morning for the trip to Nottingham for the ISA National tournament. Here is coach Henrietta’s match report:
“An exciting day at Nottingham University for the U14s. Despite the weather we managed to safely arrive in Nottingham to play some great netball in the university’s amazing facilities!
After a quick warm up the girls won their first match against The Kings School with ease. The next two matches were against two very strong teams but the girls fought hard and lost both by very close margins.
The results put them into the bowl play offs where they played a further two matches, narrowly missing out on bringing the bowl home.
The whole team worked tirelessly throughout the day and represented the school fantastically. They showed excellent resilience during the hard matches and listened well during half time feedback, to return to the court even more determined than before.
There are things to work on and the students have reflected on their game play. They have come back even more motivated than before and ready to train hard next year to go back in Year 11 to bring back some medals.
It was a joy to take them and they were great company all day!”
