King Alfred School Year 11 students celebrated with outstanding GCSE results in 2018. Pupils had much to smile about with a huge 57% of all entries resulting in A* to A or 9 – 7 grades. This represents our best GCSE performance in many years. 17 % of all grades in the new numeric grading system were awarded ‘9s’ [above the old A*], far surpassing the national average of 4.5% Furthermore, 95% of all grades were in the A* – C or 9 – 4 range.
Robert Lobatto, King Alfred School Head, said “These are a truly excellent set of results, richly deserved by our students who have worked exceedingly hard this year. This shows that outstanding academic success does not have to mean pressure and stress. They are a great springboard for continued success at A levels. I congratulate them all.”
The 48 Year 11 students performed excellently across all subject areas but Music was particularly strong with eleven out of fourteen students achieving grade 9 and 100% of Music students recording grades between 9 – 7. The entire Geography cohort also achieved grades with the 9-7 range.
In Science, 100% of Physics students maintained the standard set last year by achieving A* – B grades and this year that great achievement was also matched in Biology. In Art and Design five pupils achieved the new grade 9 and 100% of the Art and Design students achieved grades 9 – 6.
The core subjects of English and Maths continued to shine with 96% of students achieving grades 9 – 4 and five students securing a 9 in Maths. 87% of English Literature students secured a 6 or above.
Spirits were high at Manor Wood as the students picked up their results. With great achievements from all their hard work in the bag, talk soon turned to next steps for this talented bunch.
