GCSE Options

Year 10 and 11 Curriculum

Students at The King Alfred School generally study nine or ten subjects at GCSE although this can vary depending on what is best for any individual student.

Assessment usually takes the form of coursework during the year (controlled assessment) and a formal written paper or papers in Year 11 at the end of a two year course.

The programme for students entering Year 10 comprises four areas of study/activity:

  • Examined subjects to be studied for GCSE
  • ‘Choice’ activities; non-examinable options undertaken on Wednesday afternoons
  • Games
  • One weekly tutorial period (Form Hour), covering a number of activities, including planning careers, study skills, IT, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), and Skills for Society in general
