At the heart of King Alfred’s philosophy is our child centred approach. This has been the practice here since 1898 when the school opened, and remains equally true today. We appreciate that every child is unique and has their own set of strengths, attributes and areas to develop.

The move from Lower School to Upper School is exciting – but it can also prove daunting. One way that KAS supports students in navigating this time is a fun transition day, which we held in school last week.
Current Year 6 students were joined by those coming to KAS for the first time in September. Together, they took part in a range of bonding and team-building activities. These included:
😃 Fun problem-solving challenges set by WiseUp Team Building, such as 'Gutter Ball', 'Crazy Maze' and 'Deadly Dice'
👩🏫 A callover (our version of assembly) with next year's Head of Year 7, 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐲 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫
📝 Taster lessons with Upper School teachers
🌮 Lunch and breaks taken together
"Today has made me feel good about joining the school," shared 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐚, one of the incoming Year 7s. "Everyone has been very welcoming. I've had the chance to make friends with students who are already here, so it will help to know some people already."
In addition to the transition day, we have also held parents meetings and produced a guide to life in Upper School, which will be shared with all families. Year 7 students will also be invited into school for a transition afternoon at the start of the academic year.

“The aim is to allow children to grow chiefly through their own efforts, and more or less at their own temperamental pace, into their own image.”
The village green setting of the main school site contributes to the community feeling with Lower School classrooms all opening out directly onto the play areas, parents encouraged to spend time in the grounds and all students offered opportunities for outdoor learning.
