At the heart of King Alfred’s philosophy is our child centred approach. This has been the practice here since 1898 when the school opened, and remains equally true today. We appreciate that every child is unique and has their own set of strengths, attributes and areas to develop.
The KAS community was blown away by this term’s Middle School show, which was hailed as “sensational”, “sheer joy” and “magical from start to finish”. 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 2025 was a joyous display of effort, excitement and enjoyment – not just of sport, but of togetherness!
Students from Year 6 to Year 10 participated in track and field events under the banner of Team Blue 💙, Yellow 💛 or Red ❤️. A just-for-fun benchball tournament was also held on the field.
Dressed in their respective colours, everyone gave maximum effort, whether running, jumping or throwing. But most energy went into cheering on their teammates, with the StoneX Stadium filled with a supportive roar!
Reflecting after the event, Head 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨 said: "Competition is a natural part of human life and plays an important role in any child’s development. However, I came away reflecting that there is a significant difference between healthy and unhealthy competition.
"Healthy competition encourages children to push themselves, set goals and learn from both wins and losses.
"It is focused on personal improvement rather than beating others.
"It values teams and cooperation, effort and endeavour, and sees both triumphs and failure as stepping stones to growth.
"It locates self-worth within the individual, therefore enabling the celebration of the success of others.
"What I saw on Sports Day was definitely competition, but I'm glad to say it was of the healthy kind, with every student motivated to do their best."
Well done to all of our athletes for a fantastic day – and to the victorious Red team!

“The aim is to allow children to grow chiefly through their own efforts, and more or less at their own temperamental pace, into their own image.”
The village green setting of the main school site contributes to the community feeling with Lower School classrooms all opening out directly onto the play areas, parents encouraged to spend time in the grounds and all students offered opportunities for outdoor learning.
