Well Deserved Success for GCSE Students

Celebrations were in order today as Year 11 students came into school to collect their excellent GCSE results.
51% of results were at grades 8 and 9 (equivalent to A*), and 74% at grades 9-7 (equivalent to A* and A). Overall, 99.5% of results were graded 9-4 (equivalent to A* – C).
With the support of our passionate and inspirational staff, these grades reflect both the dedication of the students to learning and the rising academic standards in the school.
Robert Lobatto, King Alfred School Head, said “I’m immensely proud of this group of students who have managed all the ups and downs of this pandemic. These results show that you can have very high academic standards combined with a holistic approach to education without placing unnecessary pressures on young people. I also believe that the opportunity for teachers to assess the work over time has helped shine a light on how we should be rethinking GCSEs and along with many others in the Education world, I hope this will lead to positive changes moving forward.”

Year 11 student Maisie was one of many happy faces picking up her results: “I’ve done well so I’m very happy, I’m most pleased with my 9 in History. The school have been really supportive throughout lockdown and I think that because you have a close relationship with your teachers here, you really want to do well for them and it’s a really nice environment to work in. For A levels I’m staying here to study History, English, Sociology and Photography.”
The majority of students are returning to the school for Sixth Form in a few weeks time, but today was a chance to celebrate what they’ve achieved over the past two years.
Louis is one of the many students staying on for A levels: “I’m really happy that I got the grades that I wanted. Even during lockdown I’ve still enjoyed school, KAS has kept it really fun. I’m staying here to do Computer Science, Economics and Design Technology which I’m looking forward to.”
Jacob, also pictured below said: “I joined the school in Year 10 and, once I got over how different it is, I just felt at home straight away. I got the grades I needed and I’m going to stay to do the UAL Extended Diploma in Performance and Production Arts which I’m really looking forward to as Drama is my passion.”
Emma Sevitt, Head of Years 10 & 11 said; “Another year group who have had to cope with a different kind of learning experience, and another year group who have risen above those challenges to achieve fantastic results – I’m very proud of them and know that they will use this platform to push themselves even higher as they progress to A levels.”
Laura was another student who was pleased with her results: “Our teachers were great at supporting us and helping us to learn the content even when school moved online so it hasn’t been too stressful and I’m pleased with the results I got. I’m staying to do Psychology, Film Studies and Photography and an EPQ too.”
Bogues who attended the Lower School before moving to the Upper School is also staying on for Sixth Form: “I’ve done well so I’m happy! I found the lockdown learning was really good, especially our Physics teacher who kept us engaged using all different online tests and features. I’m looking forward to coming back in September to study Physics, Maths and Design Technology.”
