Lower School : ages 4 - 11
-
Our Reception classes are based at our new Ivy Wood site, immediately opposite the main school at Manor Wood. Here in the grounds of Anna Pavlova's house, they occupy classrooms designed to meet the needs of our smallest pupils and a new, exciting adventure playground.
-
The emphasis in Reception is on helping the children settle happily into school life through activity and play, although those 4 year olds who are ready are encouraged to begin reading, writing and number work. When children are 5 and 6 most make their breakthrough in numeracy and Literacy.
-
In all four infant classrooms there are assistants to help the teachers and specialist help for Computing, Maths, Music, CDT and PE.
-
As the children get older there is increased use of specialist teachers for French, PE, Drama, Art and Swimming.
-
There is a well-resourced and extensive library complete with knowledgeable librarians who underpin all classroom work as well as provide one-to-one advice on books and help with reading.
-
Homework is introduced to 9 and 10 year olds.
-
Once a year, the 9 and 10 year olds go to camps or field centres.
Once a week the whole of Lower School assembles for "Callover" in the Hall, during which children are encouraged to perform both individually and as a class.
