Raphael Samuel

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Raphael Samuel was a student at the King Alfred School in the early 1950s. He died in 1996. He spent most of his working life at Ruskin College, Oxford and was the author of several books such as, for example, ‘Theatres of Memory’ and ‘Island Stories.’ For the last seven years the History Department has organised an annual lecture in his memory and to keep alive his very particular ideas about history. We have had a number of historians, such as Barbara Taylor, Peter Claus and Toby Young, associated with the Raphael Samuel Archive, Bishopsgate Institute, in recent years. Before Ed Webb, former Head of History, left for the Demoratic Republic of the Congo, he asked  if I would like to give the 2012 talk as part of saying goodbye to the school. I am very happy to accept this invitation.

Invitation for parents

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Matt Andrews (Science Department) has forwarded the following invitation:
‘Dear friends,
As you may or may not know I am leaving KAS to cycle around the world, on the way scattering some of the ashes of our colleague Tony Young.
My friend Anthony King and I will be leaving for this epic thigh burner from the front gates of KAS on the morning of 2nd September (The sunday before staff come back to school).  Please put the date in your diary and be sure to come and wave us off.
On the morning of our departure, just prior to us cycling off, we would like you to join us in a fairwell charity breakfast in the Main Hall at KAS.  There will be hot and cold breakfasts with the proceeds going to Brain Tumor UK.  Times to be confirmed.
In the meantime I am looking for volunteers to help with planning and running of the breakfast.  So, if you are interested (I know it seems a long way off) please do get in contact.
Thanks for your support and don’t forget that date!’

Students will attempt to answer ancient question: the chicken or the egg?

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Hello!
It’s Hannah Owen and Calvin Carrier from Yr10, Ella Ford from Yr 9 and Eve Owen from Yr7 here.
We are just emailing some of the teachers and staff to let you guys know about the fundraiser that we are doing. We have named our fundraiser “The Chicken and Egg Run”  and all the money will go to Free The Children. This Sunday on the 20th of May we will be racing from the South Bank to Highgate, Hannah dressed as the chicken, Calvin as the egg and Ella and Eve as the judges. Our aim is to try and answer the famous question of who came first, the chicken or the egg? (get it?!?!) We have attached the link to our fundraising site below. Amazingly, so far we have been able to raise £2,885 for Free The Children. We have written to The One Show and let them know about our fundraiser and hopefully when the race is over we are going to try and get in contact with Ellen Degeneres. We all really want to spread the message about this charity because we feel it is an excellent cause.
Thank you very much,
Hannah, Calvin, Ella and Eve x

‘Yesterday my form (8CM) ran a ‘KAS has talent’ event for Year 3 and 4. The afternoon was a total success.  The variety and level of talent was excellent, including singing, dancing, gymnastics, comedy acts, magic tricks and playing musical instruments. Special thanks goes to our presenters for the afternoon – Jessica Leeney and Hope Palmer. The judges were Leah Gavshon Sarah, Louis Starkey and Anais Thomopoulou, who were very positive throughout. We reaised around £100.00 for Ratu Meli Memorial School in the Yasawas, Fiji!. Well Done to everyone involved.’

Year 7 & 8 Girls achieve a clean sweep in netball

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Miffy Wilson (Middle and Upper School PE) has demonstrated how our avoidance of competition does not preclude success in sport:

‘After fifteen plus matches over two terms, both Year 7 and 8A Netball teams have finished first in their league. As a result of this, both teams entered the league play offs on Tuesday the 27th of March 2012. For the first time ever, both teams won all their matches to gain the title of Barnet Team Champions 2012. It was a fantastic afternoon, and the girls were the perfect in play, attitude, and sportsmanship!’

And special thanks to Kat Grant for support and coaching on the day.

THE EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

The extended project is a new qualification open to all sixth formers. It is an opportunity to work independently and is regarded as a very appropriate preparation for university. There is no formal teaching and there are no examinations.
Students choose the topic they wish to investigate and are entirely responsible for the project content. A tutor is assigned to teach the basic skills required to realise the projec and acts as a facilitator. Some skills will be relevant to all projects, for example: time management, research and organisation. Others will be very specific to the project carried out by a student, for example: conducting a survey or completing a risk assessment.
The project, once finished, can be either a 5000 word written investigation, or a production by the student: this could be an artefact, a website, a performance, a novel, the organisation of an event, a blog, directing a play. A 1000 word document will complement the project in some instances depending on the final piece.
Students also have to submit a production log which records planning and progress, including the review meetings with their supervisor.
Finally, students will need to make an oral presentation of their project in front of an audience.
