The Fives Court Building
The Fives Court building was first conceptualised over 10 years ago. It has been refined and honed so that we now have a ‘Fives Project’ that will have an impact on the way the whole school operates. It will meet Lower School’s needs for the foreseeable future and bring substantial benefits to Middle and Upper School pupils.
- A new library. A larger, more versatile space that can incorporate many more resources for our topic-based curriculum. Increasingly, book-based learning must be supplemented with the development of information literacy skills. From the children’s point of view, the library is the most popular place in the Lower School and they are very excited about having a bigger and better one!
- New IT facilities. Currently Lower School shares facilities with Middle and Upper School. This inevitably affects Middle and Upper School work. Often children have to share computers. They all deserve better than this.
- New art facilities. The new art room will be better equipped and incorporate space for three dimensional work and a kiln for pottery. This will increase the scope of projects that Lower School children will be able to undertake.
- Music Practice Rooms. The former electricity substation behind the new music room will be converted into a much-needed set of music practice rooms. These will be used by instrumental music teachers for students across the whole school.
- New learning support rooms. These rooms will have great lighting and be conducive to one-to-one and small group learning. We are also desperately short of office and counselling spaces and this will give us more flexibility.
- The Auditorium Staircase – This is one of the direct benefits to Middle and Upper School students. The auditorium staircase will provide an excellent multipurpose space for talks, presentations and additional teaching space. This mini Auditorium will be used by all pupils, from Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. It will enhance the richness of their learning. In addition, parents will be able to use the space for meetings and presentations.
- A Science/Food technology room. This will be another multipurpose space used across the school. Lower School science lessons will be taught there, broadening what is currently on offer. Cooking and Food Technology will incorporate ‘Choice’ and GCSE option sessions from Middle and Upper School, as well as some Lower School classes. The room will also provide an alternative food handling space to augment the kitchen facilities which are stretched to capacity. The 6th form in particular are excited about the opportunities this room offers.
- Modern Foreign Languages. The freed up library space will be taken up by Modern Languages. These improvements will allow this department – and it is a department now – to present Modern Languages in a much better setting. The Year 6 students greatly enjoy the language lab facility in M/US and it would be beneficial to be able to extend this type of provision to Lower School.
- A new ground floor staffroom. It is essential for the staff and children to enjoy easy and open access; the staff need an adequate space for lesson preparation (including the use of ICT) and for meetings.
