Hans Woyda:

For a number of years the school has been taking part in the Hans Woyda Mathematics competition (named after the Senior Mathematics Master at Kingston Grammar School when the competition began). The competition was established in 1979 for schools in the Greater London and Home Counties areas.

It involves a team of four students (one each from year 9, year 11, year 12 and year 13) competing against the clock both individually and in teams against the opposing school. There is a league of four local schools and the winner of the league enters a knockout tournament.

We have had many exciting matches throughout the years and won our league three years ago (sadly in the knockout we were just beaten).

UKMT:

Every year the United Kingdom Mathematics Challenges take place at three levels initially –Junior for years 7 and 8, Intermediate for years 9, 10 and 11, and Senior for years 12 and 13. Children participate on a voluntary basis and can be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates if they are high scorers. The questions asked are very different from what the normal curriculum covers giving a freshness that is appreciated by many pupils.

Every year there is considerable interest and we regularly have students achieve very high scores which entitle them to enter a much harder follow up competition (mostly called Olympiads).
