King alfred school. Middle school art
Art in Middle School is designed to give students a broad experience of approaches to the subject. We aim to develop a range of practical skills for working in two and three dimensions, allied to an ability to respond creatively to the environment. It will also provide a sound basis for those wishing to continue to GCSE and beyond. In Middle School children are introduced to the formal elements of Art & Design such as pattern, texture, colour and form, through an imaginative and relevant focus. They are encouraged to explore and develop their ideas, with the aim of building confidence and promoting a questioning approach. Every student is encouraged to work in a sketchbook, which it is hoped will develop into a working journal, where ideas are researched and explored. The sketchbook is a vital part of building an understanding and awareness of the process of designing and making.Students will have the experience of working in a wide range of materials, from ceramics and construction through to printmaking and graphic design. Some projects are small and detailed, while others lead to large-scale, openended outcomes. We aim to develop children’s ability to work creatively as part of a group as well as individually, and to encourage a flexible approach to the creative process. The study of Art & Design over three years in Middle School will be a varied and enjoyable experience for all, providing continuity from Lower School. It is also good preparation for those wishing to study the subject further at GCSE.
Assessment of work
We have a policy of marking without grades. Each student will receive written feedback in the back of their sketchbook for each homework, and will also complete a self evaluation towards the end of each term. This will be completed in consultation with the teacher and is aimed to develop greater self awareness and independence.
Homework
Homework is generally set each week in students’ sketchbooks. It is hoped they will spend between 30 and 45 minutes each week on homework. They will range from research and practical work to mini assignments. This sketchbook should last them right the way through from Year 7 to Year 9 and will become a document of their progress through those years.
Equipment required
Middle School students will need some soft pencils (HB-3B), colour pencils, felts, and maybe a small watercolour set. Glue and scissors would also be very useful. Other materials not essential but would be beneficial.
Parental involvement and further study
Students often take great pride in their sketchbooks. Encourage them to use them for their own work as well as schoolwork, and to take their time over artwork. Visit museums and galleries, and watch TV Art programmes with them. We have details of holiday and Saturday workshops should you be interested. The Middle School Art course is designed in part to prepare students should they wish to continue studying Art & Design at GCSE and A-level.
