Middle School Art

Art in Middle School is designed to give students a broad experience of approaches to the subject. We aim to develop in students a range of practical skills for working in two and three dimensions, allied to an ability to respond creatively to their environment. It will also provide a sound basis for those wishing to continue to GCSE and beyond.

In Middle School children are introduced to the formal elements of Art and Design such as pattern, texture, colour and form, through an imaginative and relevant focus. They are encouraged to explore and develop their ideas, with the aim of building confidence and promoting a questioning approach. Every student is encouraged to work in a sketchbook, which it is hoped will develop into a working journal, where ideas are researched and explored. The sketchbook is a vital part of building understanding and an awareness of the process of designing and making.

Students will have the experience of working in a wide range of materials, from ceramics and construction through to printmaking and graphic design. Some projects are small and detailed, others will lead to large-scale, open-ended outcomes. We aim to develop children’s ability to work creatively as part of a group as well as individually.

The study of Art over three years in Middle School will hopefully be an enjoyable experience for all, as well as providing continuity from Lower School, and a preparation for those wishing to study the subject further at GCSE.
