Parental Co-operation

"The home must help the school. The school will fail to achieve its aim unless a common bond of sympathy between home and school is maintained." (from the King Alfred School preliminary circular in July 1897)

This is a school founded by parents, largely governed by parents and with parents on key committees. Parental help and support is essential for the Head and staff to run the school and achieve shared goals.
King Alfred School is owned by and operated through the King Alfred School Society, members of which are mainly parents, ex-parents, ex-students and members of staff. The governing body – Council – is usually composed of parents and ex-parents (some of them ex-pupils) and Council, like any board of governors, is legally responsible for educational policy, financial management and the development of the school. The annual election of parents as Members of Council ensures an active parental interest and input in how education is carried out.
Equally important, King Alfreds recognises the need to work with, and support, parents in their endeavours to bring up their children. Family life is a vital overall aspect of education and parental involvement in the general life of the school is encouraged. As a community we are supported by our parents' interest not only in their own, but in other people's children too.
