Council

Council is the governing body of the school. Like any school governing body, Council is legally responsible for educational policy, financial management and the development of the school. In practical terms, Council appoints the Head and the Bursar and delegates the day to day running of the school to the Head but Council is consulted and informed by the Head and the rest of the Management Team about many aspects of school life. Maintaining the school ethos remains an important part of Council's responsibilities.

Council is a body elected by members of the King Alfred School Society (KASS) at the Society's Annual General Meeting. Council has 21 elected members, most of whom serve for three-year terms. The President and the Treasurer are elected annually. Every year, a third stand down, some choosing to stand again while others retire. Anyone who is a member of KASS can stand for election. Currently the elected group is composed of parents of existing pupils, parents of ex-pupils and ex-pupils. Council meetings are also attended by the Head, the Bursar, the Head of Academic Progress, the Head of Pastoral Care, the Head of Lower School, the Head of Middle School, representatives of the teaching and administrative staff and representatives of the pupils. Council meets twice every term.
